Read Luke 10: 25-37 the good Samaritan

Matthew looked at 5 hindrances to us loving each other:

  1. Selfishness
  2. Dishonesty
  3. Judgementalism
  4. Winning the argument
  5. Super-Spiritual

And 5 helps, or Christ-like characteristics that we should aim to develop:

  1. Compassionate
  2. Practical
  3. Humble
  4. Genuine
  5. Knowing the author

Questions:

  • A. Look at the passage in Luke 10, and try and remember some of the points that were talked about, firstly looking at ways that the five hindrances prevented certain travellers from loving the wounded man, or attitudes that Jesus didn’t demonstrate.

  • B. Do the same with the five Christ-like characteristics, looking at the Samaritans response and Christ’s.

  • C. Being ‘moved with Compassion’ is really important, we see Jesus acted several times in this way. Can you talk about a time personally when you were emotionally stirred in this way to reach out and show love to someone, causing you some inconvenience as it did the Samaritan?

  • D. Sometimes we are really struggling to show love towards someone, we just can’t find any love in us, but we need to know the author of Love and ask Him to give us a super-natural measure of his love for them. In threes, pray together for more of His love for each other, that you may be able to demonstrate love more easily and spontaneously.
